The police have arrested a man named Sanjay Roy for raping and murdering a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. He is currently in judicial custody for 14 days. Sanjay was working as a civic volunteer with the Disaster Management Group of Kolkata Police since 2019. Since his arrest, new revelations are being made about Sanjay Roy every day. It is being said that he has married three or four times. The team of our associate ‘The Lallantop’ spoke to Durga Devi, one of the mother-in-laws of the accused, and tried to know about Sanjay.
Durga Devi told that her daughter Shanti was married to Sanjay Roy on February 19, 2022. Shanti died of cancer in August 2023. She was married once before. Sanjay married my daughter after getting divorced from his first wife. Durga Devi said that my daughter’s life was not going well after marriage with Sanjay. She said, ‘She had a miscarriage after being three months pregnant. Sanjay beat my daughter a lot. She called us and informed us about this. A complaint was lodged against Sanjay at Kalighat Police Station.’
She further said, ‘When our daughter’s health deteriorated, we got her examined and it was found that she had cancer. We started her treatment ourselves. Sanjay did not pay the money. He used to wear a police uniform. He used to say that he works in the police. He used to wear the uniform that is worn in military camps. His two sisters are also in the police. Sanjay also had a sir with him, with whom he used to come and go.’ Durga Devi’s second daughter said that after Didi’s (Sanjay’s wife Shanti) death, Sanjay Roy did not pick up our calls, nor did he ever come. He was completely cut off from us.
Durga Devi’s second daughter said that Sanjay used to beat her sister after drinking alcohol. Regarding the brutality done with the trainee doctor in RG Kar Medical College, Durga Devi said, ‘I don’t think Sanjay can do all this alone. I don’t know how he did it. There must have been other people with him. Otherwise, he would not have had the courage to beat a doctor and a sister alone.’ Let us tell you that the CBI has now taken over the investigation of this gruesome incident. The forensic team has inspected the crime scene to collect evidence in the case.
How did Sanjay Roy come under police custody?
CCTV footage shows Sanjay Roy entering the emergency building of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital at 4 am on the day of the incident. He was wearing a Bluetooth device around his neck. However, when he came out of the building 40 minutes later, the earphones were missing. Police found a Bluetooth device lying near the dead body of the victim doctor. Investigation revealed that this device was connected to the Bluetooth of Sanjay Roy’s mobile. In this way, police found a link of Sanjay Roy with this gruesome incident.
Kolkata Police investigations revealed that Roy’s mobile phone contained several violent and pornographic video clips. According to local media reports, he reportedly confessed his crime without any remorse and told the police, ‘If you want, you can hang me.’ Sanjay Roy’s neighbours revealed many details about his personal life. They alleged that he had married many times. His three wives left him due to his abusive nature. His fourth wife died of cancer last year.
