OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Knows a thing or two about product launches.
Under his leadership, OpenAI launched its hit product, ChatGPTIn November 2022. Chatbot Took the world by storm and helped kick-start An ongoing AI arms race. Its popularity also helped make OpenAI a household name in the tech world.
On Monday, Altman shared his thoughts on the product launch while responding to one of OpenAI’s employees on X, formerly Twitter.
“OpenAI does wonders, but we also wrap a lot of things in bash while loops to work around periodic crashes,” OpenAI technical staff member Nate McLees wrote on Saturday.
McAleese’s post prompted a response from Altman a few days later. Altman, for his part, likens the process of launching a product to attaching a rocket to a dumpster.
“If you strap a rocket to a dumpster, the dumpster can still go into orbit, and the trash can fire out of the atmosphere,” Altman wrote in the X Post on Monday.
“Many important insights contained in that observation. But it is better to launch nice satellites instead.”
This isn’t the first time Altman has offered advice on social media.
The billionaire entrepreneur and investor posted it Insights on Tech and Leadership X and on his blog.
In December, Altman published a blog post titled “What I Wish Someone Had Told Me”. The post contains 17 pointers on topics as diverse as managing teams and product execution.
“Rapid iteration can do a lot; if you iterate too fast, it’s usually wrong. Plans should be measured in decades, execution should be measured in weeks,” Altman wrote in his post.
Then, in April, Altman said in an X post that being a concise communicator was a “huge unlock” for him.
“Learning how to speak in 30 seconds what would take most people 5 minutes is a huge unlock,” Altman wrote on April 28.
Mastering brevity, Altman said in a subsequent post, “is a surprisingly learnable skill.”
“If you struggle with this, consider asking a good friend to listen to you and then have him rewrite the brief for you a few dozen times. I’ve found this works really well!” he added.
Altman’s representatives at OpenAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent outside regular business hours.
