There was a postgame warning for Baltimore Ravens linebacker Roquan Smith Kansas City Chiefs Tight end Peyton Hendershot after a tackle on the sideline Thursday night at Arrowhead Stadium.
Meanwhile loss of the crow For the Chiefs to start the new NFL season, there was a moment early in the fourth quarter where Kansas City star quarterback Patrick Mahomes was scrambling to pick up a first down.
After doing so, it appeared that Smith pushed Mahomes late, and the quarterback went sprawling to the turf, causing the home crowd to go ballistic that a penalty should be called.
However, the yellow hankie remained in the referee’s pocket. Smith, who was waving his arms at the moment to signal that it shouldn’t have been a personal foul, said Mahomes tried to sell it as a penalty.
“Oh, it flopped. Yeah, it flopped,” Smith told reporters after the game. “That’s why the referees didn’t call it – it was a great no-call by the ref.”
But as Smith waved for the no-call, Hendershott, who was in street clothes as an inactive player for the Chiefs during the game, appeared to take exception to Smith’s actions at his quarterback.
The broadcast featured a moment where Hendershot appeared to shove Smith, and the linebacker even confirmed it with a message after the game.
“But, whatever [number] 88 is, I don’t know who he is, but he’s going to make himself look better,” Smith said. “He made some slick pushes.”
Reporters quickly questioned Smith again to confirm what had happened, as he also appeared to back away after Hendershot shoved him into the chief’s side, leading to a scuffle before the tension dissipated.
“Whoever number 88 is, I don’t know who it is, but I’ll see it when I see it,” Smith concluded before asking another question.
The Chiefs would go on to score on that drive, as rookie Xavier Worthy picked up his second career touchdown on his third touch of the football. NFL debut35-yard score due to blown coverage.
Smith’s individual stat line was solid, as he led the Ravens in tackles with seven (four solo), while also picking off Mahomes late in the first half. However, he made a horse collar tackle on his first action of the regular season while trying to take down Rashi Rice.
The Ravens eventually fell to the Chiefs, the reigning Super Bowl champions, in tragic fashion, as it looked like they had a chance to tie or even win, after tight end Isaiah’s final play of the game looked like a touchdown. In regulation, however, Lily’s toe was an inch out of bounds.
Since these aren’t division foes, the Ravens won’t see the Chiefs again until a possible playoff matchup like the AFC Championship Game earlier this year.
If and when that happens, Smith has been very clear that he will look at Hendershot after his actions in Week 1 had problems.
