RFK Jr. Emerges as Wild Card: New Poll Shows Him Undermining Trump’s Chances Against Kamala Harris

RFK Jr. Spoiling Donald Trump’s Chances Against Kamala Harris: New Poll

A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted after President Biden’s exit from the 2024 presidential race shows Vice President Kamala Harris leading former President Donald Trump by 4 percentage points in a three-way race that includes independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Harris garners 42% of the vote, Trump 38%, and Kennedy 8% in this hypothetical matchup. The inclusion of RFK Jr. appears to benefit Harris, as the same poll shows she holds a narrower 2-point lead over Trump (44% to 42%) in a direct head-to-head matchup.

Kennedy, the son of former President John F. Kennedy, has yet to qualify for the ballot in many states ahead of the November 5 election. However, the poll results suggest his candidacy could siphon votes away from Trump and improve Harris’ chances of winning the presidency.

Harris, 59, has secured the Democratic nomination after Biden, 81, ended his reelection effort following a debate performance in which he often stammered and failed to aggressively challenge Trump’s attacks.

The poll found 56% of registered voters agreed that Harris is “mentally sharp and able to deal with challenges,” compared to 49% for Trump, 78, and only 22% for Biden.

While nationwide surveys provide important signals of voter sentiment, the outcome of the presidential election ultimately depends on the results in a handful of competitive states that determine the winner of the Electoral College.

The Reuters/Ipsos poll, conducted online, surveyed 1,241 U.S. adults nationwide, including 1,018 registered voters.
