Israel killed Hamas chief Ismail Haniyya early on Wednesday. The Hamas chief was killed in Iran’s capital Tehran, which has been confirmed by Hamas. Hamas has issued a statement saying that the Palestinian group’s politburo chief has died in a ‘treacherous Israeli attack’ in Tehran. Haniyya had come to Tehran to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Iran’s new President Masoud Pezeshkian.

Moussa Abu Marzouk, a member of the Hamas Political Bureau, said that Haniyya’s death would be avenged. He said that the ‘cowardly’ killing of Ismail Haniyya would be answered.

Haniya, who lives in Qatar, was seen at the inauguration ceremony of Iranian President Pezeshkian on Tuesday. During his meeting with the Iranian President, Haniya thanked Iran for its support to Hamas and Palestine. He also met Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei a few hours before he was killed in an Israeli attack on his residence in Tehran.

The statement said the attack took place in the early hours of Wednesday and an investigation was underway to determine the cause of the attack.

The President of the Palestinian Authority condemned the killing

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has condemned the killing of the Hamas chief and called it a ‘cowardly act’. He has said that the killing of Ismail Haniyeh is a very ‘dangerous development’.

What did Israel say?

“This is the right way to cleanse the world of this filth. There will be no more imaginary peace or surrender agreements… there will be no mercy for such people,” Israel’s Heritage Minister Amihai Eliyahu wrote on the social media site X after news of Haniya’s killing broke.

He added, “The strong hand that strikes them will bring peace and a little comfort and strengthen our ability to live in peace with those who want peace. Hania’s death makes the world a little better.”

On Haniya’s death, American MP Mike Waltz has said that Haniya was the terrorist face of Hamas, whom even Iran could not save. On Twitter, Mike wrote, ‘Haniya was the terrorist face of Hamas. That man had relations with Ayatollah, used to hold court in luxury hotels of Qatar and Turkey.’

Haniyeh was the militant face of Hamas. He mingled with ayatollahs and held court in luxury hotels in Qatar and Turkey.
