Former United States Vice President Dick Cheney, a lifelong Republican, has said he will vote for Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in the November 5 presidential election.
“In the 248-year history of our nation, no person has ever posed a greater threat to our republic than Donald Trump,” Cheney said of the Republican contender and former US president.
Cheney, who served as vice president under President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2009, confirmed Harris’ endorsement in a statement on Friday, saying Trump “can never be trusted with power again”.
“That [Trump] He tried to steal the last election by using lies and violence to keep himself in power after the voters rejected him,” Cheney said.
“As citizens, it is the duty of each of us to protect our Constitution and put the country above partisanship. That is why I will cast my vote for Vice President Kamala Harris,” he added.
His daughter Liz Cheney, a former Republican member of Congress from Wyoming, Harrison endorsed on Wednesday.
Liz Cheney became a fierce critic of Trump after thousands of his supporters stormed the US Capitol on January 6, 2021 in an attempt to overturn his election defeat. She co-chaired A Congressional investigation in attack.
Trump responded Friday on his Truth social platform by calling Cheney an “irrelevant RINO,” a term he applies to Republicans who are not loyal to him, meaning “Republicans in name only.”
Jane O’Malley, Harris’ campaign chairman, told Dillon: “The Vice President is proud to have Cheney’s endorsement, and deeply respects his courage to put the country on the side.”
Several other top Republicans have come out in support of Harris while some, including Senator Mitt Romney and former Vice President Mike Pence, say they will not vote for Trump.
