Rep. Adam Schiff Calls on Biden to Withdraw from 2024 Race

In a significant development, California Representative Adam Schiff has emerged as the most prominent elected Democrat to publicly advocate for President Joe Biden to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race. Schiff, a key ally of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and a Senate hopeful, emphasized that the decision to step aside rests with President Biden, but he believes it is time for Biden to relinquish his candidacy to bolster the chances of defeating former President Donald Trump in the upcoming election.

Schiff’s call for Biden to withdraw from the race comes following a recent lackluster debate performance that sparked worries about Biden’s ability to lead for another term. The 81-year-old president has faced growing pressure from within the Democratic Party to make way for Vice President Kamala Harris or another potential candidate. Schiff expressed reservations about Biden’s capacity to defeat Trump, warning that a potential second term for the former president could pose a significant threat to the foundations of democracy.

Schiff’s statement coincided with calls from Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Democratic leaders to postpone the virtual vote to renominate Biden, originally slated for early August, to allow for further deliberation. The Democratic National Convention’s rules committee is set to convene to finalize plans for the nomination process, aiming to strike a balance between meeting deadlines and ensuring a thorough deliberative process.

While discussions continue within the Democratic Party regarding Biden’s candidacy, a recent poll by the AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found that nearly two-thirds of US Democrats believe Biden should allow the party to pick a new candidate. These developments underscore the growing concerns within the party about Biden’s ability to secure victory over Trump in the November election.
