Dr. Ruth Westheimer’s Family and Children
Dr. Ruth Westheimer was a renowned sex therapist, media personality, and Holocaust survivor. She was married three times, with her third marriage to Manfred “Fred” Westheimer being her longest and most significant relationship.
Manfred Westheimer
Manfred Westheimer, like his wife Ruth, was a refugee from Nazi Germany. The couple met on a ski trip in the Catskills in 1961 and married that same year. They remained together until Manfred’s death in 1997 from heart failure at the age of 70.
When asked about their sex life by interviewer Diane Sawyer, Manfred famously quipped, “The shoemaker’s children have no shoes.” This playful response highlighted the couple’s comfort with discussing intimate topics, despite Manfred’s own profession as a telecommunications engineer.

Joel Westheimer
Joel Westheimer is a professor at the University of Ottawa and a renowned education scholar. He holds the University Research Chair in Democracy and Education and is a fellow of the American Educational Research Association. Joel earned his BSE from Princeton University and his PhD from Stanford University.

Miriam Westheimer has extensive experience in education, social services, and nonprofit administration. She lived in Israel for six years and later married Joel Henry Einleger. Miriam has worked as a project manager, consultant, board president, international director, and founding executive director. She has also modified and expanded the HIPPY early childhood education program in the US and abroad.
In addition to her two children, Dr. Ruth Westheimer was survived by four grandchildren.
