Relief to Bihar’s strongman Anand Mohan, court acquits him in Delhi assault case

Bihar’s strongman leader Anand Mohan Singh has got a big relief from Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court. Rouse Avenue Court has acquitted Anand Mohan of the charges of assault and extortion from a person from Rajasthan in Delhi. This case is related to the incident that took place in Rajasthan Guest House in Delhi’s Chanakyapuri area in 2007.

In fact, Rajendra Singh, a resident of Rajasthan, had lodged a complaint with the police that Anand Mohan along with others had beaten him up in the guest house and threatened to kill him. Delhi’s Chanakyapuri police had registered an FIR in this case under sections 323, 506, 387, 34 of the IPC. During the trial, the complainant Rajendra Singh died and his father Shambhu Singh retracted his previous statement given to the police in the court.

During the hearing, Anand Mohan’s lawyer argued that the police did not have any solid evidence or witnesses in this case. False allegations were made against him in this case to implicate him out of political animosity. Anand Mohan was present in the Rouse Avenue Court at the time of the verdict.

Who is Anand Mohan Singh?

Anand Mohan Singh hails from Pachgachiya village in Saharsa district of Bihar. His grandfather Ram Bahadur Singh was a freedom fighter. He was introduced to politics in 1974 during Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan’s Sampoorna Kranti movement, due to which he even left his college. He also had to stay in jail for 2 years during the Emergency. It is said that Anand Mohan Singh started his political career at the age of 17.

In 1980, he founded the Samajwadi Kranti Sena, which was formed to fight the upliftment of the lower castes. After this, his name was included among the criminals and from time to time rewards were announced for his arrest. During that time, he also contested the Lok Sabha elections but could not win. In the year 1983, Anand Mohan was imprisoned for 3 months.

Dalit IAS officer sentenced for murder

Although Anand Mohan Singh was accused in many cases, most of the cases were either dropped or he was acquitted. But in 1994, a case came up which shook not only Bihar but the entire country. On 5 December 1994, a Dalit IAS officer G Krishnaiya of Gopalganj was beaten and shot dead by a mob. This mob was instigated by Anand Mohan. In this case, 6 people including Anand and his wife Lovely were made accused. In 2007, Patna High Court convicted him and sentenced him to death. This was the first case in independent India in which a politician was sentenced to death. However, in 2008, this sentence was converted into life imprisonment. In 2012, Singh had demanded a reduction in the sentence from the Supreme Court, which was rejected by the court.
