The people here will never make you their leader. You are a disgrace.’

What did Rahul Gandhi say
Reacting to the Hindenburg report on Sunday, Rahul Gandhi said that the allegations against the chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) have “seriously compromised” the integrity of the institution. Congress leader Gandhi also targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi on this issue and said that now it has become “absolutely clear why Prime Minister Modi is so scared of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) investigation.”

Is Hindenburg’s new allegation a feeling of revenge? Understand in 5 points

In a post on X, Gandhi said, “The integrity of securities regulator SEBI, which is responsible for protecting the wealth of small retail investors, has been seriously affected by the allegations against its chairperson. Honest investors across the country have many questions for the government: Why has SEBI chairperson Madhabi Puri Buch not resigned yet? If investors lose their hard-earned money, who will be responsible for it – Prime Minister Narendra Modi, SEBI chairperson or Gautam Adani?”

Hindenburg’s claim

In fact, US research and investment company Hindenburg released a report on Saturday night in which it has expressed suspicion that the reason for the reluctance of capital market regulator SEBI to take action against the Adani Group could be the stake of SEBI chief Madhabi Buch and her husband Dhawal Buch in foreign funds linked to the Adani Group. On this report, SEBI said on Sunday that it has duly investigated all the allegations against the Adani Group and the chairman provided relevant information from time to time and kept himself away from matters related to potential conflict of interest.

In response to the allegations, the Buch couple said in a joint statement on Sunday that these investments were made in 2015, much before his appointment as full-time member of SEBI in 2017 and his promotion as chairperson in March 2022. These investments were made ‘in private capacity as a common citizen while residing in Singapore’. After his appointment to SEBI, these funds became ‘dormant’.
