Rahul Gandhi can play a master stroke in Haryana, BJP’s backward caste CM will be challenged

Haryana is one of the states where Congress can claim to form the government on its own in the assembly elections of 3 states to be held this year. Congress’ performance has been strong in the assembly elections held in 2019 and the Lok Sabha elections held in 2024. But the problem of Haryana Congress is that the factionalism here spoils the Congress’ chances. The situation of factionalism can be understood in this way that only 2 months are left for the assembly elections to be completed and 2 political yatras have started in the state. And there is no communication from anywhere between the two. One yatra is being taken out by the former Chief Minister of the state Bhupendra Singh Hooda in which his son MP Deepender Hooda is being described as the candidate for the post of Chief Minister. The second yatra is being led by Dalit leader and MP Kumari Shailaja in which Shailaja is calling herself the future Chief Minister of the state. But the Congress high command will not let the assembly elections to be held in 2024 slip out of its hands due to factionalism. If political analysts of Haryana are to be believed, it seems that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi can declare a Dalit as the CM candidate in Haryana. It could be Kumari Shailja or someone else but this possibility cannot be ruled out. Because this decision can prove to be a masterstroke for Rahul Gandhi and the Congress. Because doing so can prove to be beneficial for the Congress at many levels.

1- Why this move can prove to be a masterstroke for Congress

If Congress declares a Dalit CM candidate in Haryana, then understand that Rahul Gandhi’s statements will be confirmed in which he has repeatedly expressed sympathy for Dalits. The way Rahul Gandhi made the issue of saving the Constitution, raised the issue of not including Dalit and backward officers in the Halwa ceremony during budget making, the way he is demanding caste census in every speech of his, the way he talks about the interests of Dalits and weaker sections in every speech, this decision will strengthen the trust of the common people on him. This will be a big achievement for Rahul Gandhi’s personality. Now when Rahul Gandhi says such things, the question arises that he only talks, he is not doing anything in reality. But after putting forward the name of Dalit leader Charanji Singh Channi as CM candidate in Punjab, this will be the second time when Rahul Gandhi will declare a Dalit CM candidate. Earlier in Karnataka also, Congress has made Siddaramaiah, who comes from the Dalit community, the CM. By making Dalit leader Mallikarjun Kharge the Congress president, Congress has already expressed its intentions. If a Dalit becomes the CM in Haryana, it will prove beneficial for the Congress in the future for Western UP, Delhi, and Punjab as well.

2- How important is Dalit politics in Haryana?

To garner 19% Dalit votes in Haryana, the big decision of a Dalit CM candidate can prove to be a game changer for the party. 17 assembly seats are reserved in the state. The total number of assembly seats in the state is 90. To get a majority, it is necessary to win a total of 46 seats. Obviously, the possibility of getting the Dalit votes of the state in bulk in the name of a Dalit CM candidate will increase. Earlier, Congress has taken the first step to woo Dalits by making Chaudhary Udaybhan the state president. It is worth noting that Udaybhan also comes from the Scheduled Caste. BSP has also been getting some Dalit votes in Haryana. BSP has formed an alliance with INLD in the state. BJP has also been claiming to get Dalit votes. The reason for this has been that where Jat votes have been falling, Dalit votes generally do not go there. But due to the Save Constitution slogan and Dalit CM candidate, the trend may change this time in the state. Not only in the reserved seats, but even in the general seats, Dalit votes will be capable of causing a huge upset.

3- Congress’ silence on Kumari Shailaja’s visit

Generally, the faction of former Chief Minister Chaudhary Bhupendra Singh Hooda is the most powerful in Haryana. In the Lok Sabha elections, most of the tickets were given to Hooda supporters. Bhupendra Hooda’s faction has been influential in the 2029 assembly elections as well. In the Lok Sabha elections, Bhupendra Hooda’s faction and Kumari Selja’s faction were working like completely different parties. Both factions have taken out their yatras in Haryana. Kumari Selja’s posters have pictures of Chaudhary Virendra Singh and Randeep Surjewala, but the pictures of state president Udaybhan and Bhupendra Singh Hooda are missing.

In Shailja’s tours, she is being called the CM candidate in the state, while in Bhupendra Singh Hooda’s tours, Deepender Hooda is being called the CM candidate. The Hooda faction has the support of 4 MPs of the state, while Shailja has no MP with her, but Chaudhary Virendra Singh and Randeep Surjewala are with her. But the local people are surprised by the silence of the high command on the tour of Shailja faction. Senior journalist Ajay Deep Lathar, an expert on Haryana politics, says that there can be no second opinion that the Congress high command will declare Kumari Shailja as the CM candidate. Actually, Kumari Shailja’s impeccable image and her being a woman can also go in her favor. Her closeness to Sonia Gandhi is also well known. Lathar says that the Jats of Haryana at this time only want to see the BJP losing. For this, they will also accept Kumari Shailja as the CM candidate.

4- DK Shivakumar’s case is a precedent

The role of the current Deputy CM of the state DK Shivakumar was very important in the victory of Congress in the Karnataka assembly elections, but Siddaramaiah was made the CM. There were two reasons behind this. First, Siddaramaiah being a Dalit and second, DK Shivakumar having ED and CBI cases against him. Congress understands very well that in today’s date, the Center can dare to send a CM to jail anytime. We have seen this in the case of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren. Since CBI and ED cases are also registered against Bhupinder Singh Hooda, he may have to go to jail anytime. Secondly, Hooda has been close to Robert Vadra. Because of Hooda, Robert Vadra’s name has been dragged into many cases. Congress will never want that old graves are dug up again. However, due to all these things, Bhupinder Singh Hooda is pushing his son’s name for the CM candidate instead of his own name. But in Haryana Congress, everyone may agree on the name of Bhupendra Hooda but all the factions will never be ready for his son Deepender Singh Hooda.
