Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka reached ground zero in Wayanad, meeting landslide victims

Congress leader and former MP from Wayanad Rahul Gandhi and his sister and Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra arrived in Kerala today. Both the leaders are visiting various relief camps set up in the landslide affected areas of Wayanad district and meeting the affected families. Four villages have been completely destroyed due to the landslide here and 256 people have died so far.

Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Vadra landed at Kannur airport at 9.30 am and then reached Wayanad by road. Party general secretary and Alappuzha MP KC Venugopal is also accompanying them.

According to the programme shared by the party, Rahul and Priyanka will visit the Choorlamala landslide site as well as the Community Health Centre, Dr Moopen Medical College and two relief camps in Meppadi.

Gandhi won the election from Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency in 2019 and again this year. She has also won from Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh, so she has left the Wayanad constituency. Priyanka Gandhi is expected to contest the by-election on this seat.

Four villages completely destroyed

The pictures coming from Wayanad are telling the story of the devastation there. These pictures have shaken not only Kerala but the entire country. In fact, heavy rain in Wayanad on the intervening night of Monday-Tuesday became a disaster. Landslides occurred three times between 1 am and 5 am and this caused devastation in four beautiful villages, Choorlamala, Attamala, Noolpuzha and Mundakkai, located in the catchment of the Cheliyar river below the mountain.

Entire villages were hit by huge rocks and debris. Within a short time, hundreds of houses became heaps of rubble. Whatever came in the way of the flood was swept away. Even trees were uprooted. The army took command

The Indian Army has intensified rescue operations in the landslide-affected areas in Wayanad. Under the Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief Operations (HADR), the Indian Army has intensified its efforts to rescue people trapped after the devastating landslides in Wayanad. About 500 personnel, including medical staff, have been deployed.

You can’t blame others. Nearly 1,000 people have been rescued by the Army. The Army has set up a “Command and Control Centre” headed by Major General VT Mathew, General Officer Commanding, Karnataka and Kerala Sub Area, along with Brigadier Arjun Segan, in Kozhikode to coordinate HADR efforts.
