After the coup in Bangladesh, the situation has slowly changed. Aaj Tak is continuously reporting from Dhaka. A lot has changed in Bangladesh after 5 August. During the day, there are protests and demands for justice on the streets, and now the nights of the country have also become restless. Dhaka city may be sleeping on dark nights, but the population of the city is awake on the streets. The situation is not only like this in residential areas or streets, but the youth are also guarding the main roads. Students going to school, college, university are doing duty to run the traffic system smoothly by carrying sticks in their hands and wearing jackets coated with radium. Along with this, they are keeping an eye on every person coming to the urban areas so that no anti-social element can enter the area.

People are still afraid of whatever happened on the streets of Bangladesh in the past days. That fear has taken away both sleep and peace of Bangladesh. After the violence in Old Dhaka City, local people, especially the youth, patrol their areas throughout the night. They also search every vehicle coming to the area, so that no weapons or such things can reach the residential areas. So that the rioters cannot target the people and minorities.

After the atrocities against minority Hindus in Bangladesh, Hindus have taken the responsibility of their own safety. Minority Hindus living in the Old City area are keeping vigil all night. Outside the Hindu settlement, the youth of the community are patrolling the roads leading to their settlement with sticks in their hands. There is a fear that what happened with the houses and temples of Hindus in other areas of Bangladesh may happen again. Some youth are keeping vigil with sticks in their hands while some are roaming in the streets.

While talking to Aaj Tak, local youth Madan Ravidas said that among our 5 thousand population, we are guarding our colony because the situation in Bangladesh has changed. Hindu houses and temples are being looted and therefore we are guarding the area and the temple at night. Madan Ravidas says that we go out patrolling on the main road and the roads connecting the colonies with sticks at midnight and search the vehicles coming and going from here. Also, we interrogate any person coming from outside and only then he is allowed to enter the area.

Local youth Charan Ravidas says that after Sheikh Hasina left the country on 5 August, the situation has changed and a lot of injustice has been done against the minorities. Lakhs of our sisters and daughters have been mistreated. That is why we go with our friends and keep vigil all night so that our mothers, sisters and our area remain safe.

This is not the picture of only poor Hindu settlements, but the situation is generally the same in the areas of middle class and upper class people as well. Despite all the comforts, the youth here are sleepless. With hockey sticks, iron bars, plastic rods in their hands, the youth have gone out on patrolling at night with their friends.

Ronnie says that we have formed a WhatsApp group with our friends so that we can protect our area. Recently, through our patrolling, we came to know that a robbery has taken place in the area and within a few seconds we caught the robber. In this way, the youth have caught many robbers and handed them over to the army.

Ronnie says that the biggest reason behind the formation of this self-defense force is that we can protect our family and our area by patrolling, because the law enforcement agency police is not on the streets at present and in such a situation thieves and robbers will take advantage of the opportunity.

Local youth Wali has also come out for patrolling with his friends carrying iron rods and sticks. The friends have formed a group through WhatsApp and they go out in shifts throughout the night. Wali says that we have had to take steps to protect our community and our area. Yes, we have not slept since 5 August.

The search of vehicles coming into the area from the main road begins after midnight. Unknown people are questioned and the belongings in the vehicle are also searched. Islam Chaudhary, a BA first year student, along with his group, is stopping vehicles passing on the national highway and searching them. Vehicles coming from outside are stopped and questioned.

Islam Chowdhury says that we keep an eye on suspicious people coming from outside so that no one comes to the city with weapons or suspicious items because the situation in our Bangladesh is currently tense. The streets of the city are sleeping, but the youth are awake on these streets. There is no corner or area of Dhaka where students and local people are not seen patrolling the streets.

After 5 August, these people have lost sleep. No one knows when the situation will improve, but there is a fear in the mind that in such a situation, if people go to sleep peacefully in their homes, then the fundamentalists or anti-social elements will take away the peace of the country. In such a situation, the young generation of Bangladesh is sacrificing their sleep and guarding the streets.
