On the occasion of Independence Day, President Draupadi Murmu has awarded the Shaurya Chakra and Air Force Medal (Valour) to the brave soldiers of the Air Force. The President has awarded the Shaurya Chakra to Wing Commander Vernon Desmond Keane VM Flying (Pilot). Wing Commander Jaspreet Singh Sandhu has been awarded the Air Force Medal (Valour).
Shaurya Chakra and Vayu Sena Medal (Valour) are given by the President to the Indian Armed Forces to recognize their bravery and service. These awards are given for the bravery, dedication and sacrifice of the military personnel.

What is Shaurya Chakra?
The Shaurya Chakra was first instituted on 4 January 1952 as Ashoka Chakra Category-III. It was later renamed as Shaurya Chakra on 27 January 1967. The Shaurya Chakra is awarded to officers of all ranks of the Army, Navy and Air Force, any Reserve Force, Territorial Army and any other lawfully constituted forces. The Shaurya Chakra consists of a medal and a monetary allowance of Rs 1,500.
What is Air Force Medal?
The Air Force Medal was introduced on 26 January 1960. This award is given for the bravery of air warriors, their service or devotion to duty. It consists of a medal, ribbon and bar along with a monetary allowance of Rs 500.
The Air Force Medal is awarded to officers and airmen of the Regular Air Force and officers and airmen of the Auxiliary Air Force, Air Defence Reserve and Regular Reserve. Military officers serving as pilots in the Aviation Corporation are also awarded this medal.
