President Joe Biden has tested positive for COVID-19 while campaigning in Las Vegas, the White House announced on Wednesday.

According to the president’s physician, Dr. Kevin O’Connor, Biden presented with “upper respiratory symptoms, to include rhinorrhea (runny nose) and non-productive cough, with general malaise” earlier in the day. After testing positive, Biden was prescribed the antiviral drug Paxlovid and has taken his first dose.

The positive test result came just hours after Biden had visited the Original Lindo Michoacan restaurant in Las Vegas, where he was greeting diners and was scheduled to have an interview with Univision. Biden did not wear a mask as he boarded Air Force One to return to his home in Delaware, where he will self-isolate while continuing to carry out his presidential duties.

The announcement of Biden’s positive COVID-19 test was first made by Janet Murguía, the president and CEO of the UnidosUS organization, during the group’s annual conference in Las Vegas. Biden had been scheduled to speak at the event as part of an effort to rally Hispanic voters ahead of the November election, but had to cancel his appearance due to the positive test.

Despite his mild symptoms, the 81-year-old president is expected to continue working from isolation at his Delaware residence. The White House has stated that Biden will “self-isolate and will continue to carry out all of his duties fully during that time.
