Former MLA Udaybhan Karvariya was released from jail in Prayagraj, UP. Considering his conduct, Karvariya was ordered to be released before the time period of his sentence. Karvariya was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2019 in the 1996 murder case of Samajwadi Party MLA Jawahar Yadav. At the same time, Jawahar Yadav’s wife Vijma Yadav has opposed Karvariya’s release. Vijma is an SP MLA from Pratappur assembly seat.
Jawahar Yadav was shot dead in Prayagraj. A case was registered against Karvariya, his brothers Kapilmuni Karvariya and Surajbhan Karvariya and another person in the case.

Senior Superintendent of Naini Central Jail Rang Bahadur Patel said that the orders for the release of Udaybhan Karvariya were received on Wednesday evening. Acting on the order, he was released on Thursday morning.
Let us tell you that the Governor had passed the order to release Karvariya after accepting the recommendation of the state government for premature release, using the powers conferred under Article 161 of the Constitution. Article 161 gives the Governor of a state the power to pardon, grant relief, respite or remission of sentence or suspend, reduce or commute the sentence of any convict against any law relating to any such case. Officials said Prayagraj’s senior superintendent of police and district magistrate recommended Karvariya’s release, citing his good conduct in jail. The remission order was issued last week.
Opposition to the release of Karvariya
Udaybhan Karvaria Vijma Yadav, wife of deceased Jawahar Yadav, is preparing to go to the Supreme Court for his release. She says that we will not step back until our husband’s murderer is punished. He said that if the conduct of a person sentenced to life imprisonment for murder becomes so good, then all prisoners should be released. His family has been involved in crime for many generations, how can the conduct of such a person be good in jail?
release before completion of sentence
On 13 August 1996, former MLA Jawahar Yadav and his driver Gulab were shot dead in broad daylight in Prayagraj. Orders were given for the release of Udaybhan Karvariya, convicted in this murder case that took place 28 years ago. After the approval of the Governor, the Prison Department issued an order for the release of former MLA Udaybhan Karvariya. The order said that till 30 July 2023, Udaybhan Karvariya has served 8 years 3 months 22 days of unremitting sentence and 8 years 9 months 11 days of remitting sentence.
The order for premature release was issued due to the recommendation of SSP and DM Prayagraj, Karvariya’s good conduct in jail and the recommendation made by the mercy petition committee. In this order, it was said that the prisoner should be released on presenting two sureties and one bail bond of the same amount as per the satisfaction of SP and DM Prayagraj.
