Pramod Bhagat Banned: Shock to India before Paralympics, this badminton star banned for 18 months

India has suffered a major setback ahead of the Paris Paralympic Games 2024. Badminton player Pramod Bhagat has been suspended for 18 months for violating anti-doping rules. The World Badminton Federation (BWF) gave this information on Tuesday. Due to the suspension, Bhagat will not be able to participate in the Paris Paralympics. Bhagat won the gold medal at the Tokyo Paralympics (2020) by defeating Daniel Bethell of Great Britain in the final of the men’s singles SL3 class.

Pramod was banned for this reason

Pramod Bhagat did not disclose his whereabouts on three occasions in the last 12 months. As such, he is accused of violating BWF’s anti-doping rule ‘whereabouts’. BWF said in a statement, ‘Badminton World Federation confirms that India’s Tokyo 2020 Paralympic champion Pramod Bhagat has been suspended for 18 months and he will not play in the Paris Paralympics.

It said, ‘On March 1, 2024, the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) Anti-Doping Division found Bhagat guilty of violating the BWF Anti-Doping Rules. He had failed to disclose his whereabouts three times in a year.‘ Bhagat, a 36-year-old SL3 player, had appealed against this decision in the CAS Appeals Department, which was rejected last month.

Paralympic Games to be held from 28 August

The statement said, ‘On 29 July 2024, the CAS Appeals Division rejected Bhagat’s appeal and confirmed the decision of the CAS Anti-Doping Division on 1 March 2024. His suspension is now effective.’ This suspension will remain in force till 1 September 2025. The Paris Paralympic Games are to be held from 28 August to 28 September.

Pramod Bhagat was born on 4 June 1988 in Hajipur, Bihar. However, Pramod later settled in Odisha. Bhagat suffered from polio at the age of four and came into this sport after watching his neighbor playing. Initially, he competed with able-bodied players.
