A liquor shop owner in Madhya Pradesh’s Burhanpur district tried to boost sales by highlighting the common tendency of people to become more emotional after consuming alcohol but his plan backfired and he was fined Rs 10,000, officials said.
Officials said the liquor shop owner had put up a banner near his shop in Nachankheda in Burhanpur district that read, “Learn to speak English in broad daylight”. An arrow below the message was pointing towards the liquor shop.
While it was not clear whether the poster pushed liquor sales to new heights, a photo of it went viral on social media, leading to the shop owner facing ridicule and criticism.
Notice issued to shop license holder
An official said that this entire matter also reached the district administration on Saturday. Burhanpur District Magistrate Bhavya Mittal said that she has directed the Excise Department to take action against the liquor seller. After this, the Excise officials issued a notice to the license holder of the shop.
A fine of Rs 10,000 was also imposed on him
Terming the shop owner’s reply as unsatisfactory, the officials also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on him for violating the conditions of the liquor licence, the official said.
