There is a stir in Bihar politics. The family of the late Shahabuddin, who turned from a gangster to a politician, is once again seen getting closer to RJD. On Wednesday evening, Shahabuddin’s wife Hina Shahab met RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav. This meeting took place at the residence of an MLC in Patna. Tejashwi Yadav was also present in the meeting. The meeting between the three lasted for a long time, after which a political debate has started in Bihar.
Bahubali Shahabuddin came into politics from the world of crime and was elected MLA twice and Lok Sabha MP four times from RJD. Shahabuddin died in the Corona period (May 2021). He was lodged in Tihar Jail in 2007 in a case of murder after kidnapping. He has had a lot of influence in Siwan area of Bihar. However, after his death, the political wind changed in the area, so RJD distanced itself from Shahabuddin’s family and this time in the general elections, fielded former Assembly Speaker Awadh Bihari Chaudhary from Siwan, one of the most high-profile seats. Shahabuddin’s wife Hina expressed displeasure over this and alleged that the party has ignored me in the absence of my husband.

In the recent Lok Sabha elections, Shahabuddin’s wife Hina Shahab contested as an independent candidate from Siwan and became the reason for the defeat of Lalu’s party candidate. In this election, Hina herself lost and came second, but pushed RJD’s Chaudhary to third place. There were discussions that if RJD had fielded Hina, the results would have been reversed and one seat could have gone to the party’s account. Here, as Hina Shahab’s resentment has subsided, new equations are also being formed.
Hina lost in four elections
Hina has lost from Siwan in the last four elections. This was Hina’s first election after Shahabuddin’s death in May 2021. Earlier, Shahabuddin was convicted in 2007 and when the 2009 general elections came, RJD fielded Hina. She lost this election to independent Om Prakash Yadav. After that, in 2014, RJD again bet on Hina, but she lost the election to BJP candidate Om Prakash. In 2019, Hina again contested on RJD ticket and faced defeat. In 2019, JDU’s Kavita Singh defeated her. This time RJD changed its strategy and gave ticket to former speaker Awadh Bihari Chaudhary. This angered Hina and she contested as an independent. When the results came, Hina may have lost, but she became the reason for RJD’s defeat. JDU’s Vijayalakshmi Devi got 386508 votes and Hina got 293651 votes. RJD’s Avadh Bihari got 198,823 votes. That means the margin of victory and defeat was about 93 thousand.
RJD is trying to convince the angry leaders
Experts say that the political meeting between Lalu and Shahabuddin family has deep messages. Assembly elections are due next year and RJD does not want to risk the displeasure of any leader. This is the reason why the party has once again started trying to woo its old leaders. Before the Lok Sabha elections, when Tejashwi Yadav reached Siwan with Jan Vishwas Yatra, he was expected to meet Hina Shahab. But at the last moment Hina went to her village and this meeting could not happen.
Shahabuddin was considered close to Lalu Yadav
Shahabuddin was once considered very close to RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav. Recently, the relationship between Shahabuddin’s family and RJD has deteriorated. Even before this, Lalu’s family tried to persuade Hina, but they failed. Now Wednesday’s meeting is being considered important because this meeting is giving signs of improvement in relations.
BJP said- RJD is busy gathering villains
At the same time, BJP says that Lalu Yadav is bringing back the villains of 15 years of Jungle Raj. BJP spokesperson Kuntal Krishna says that Lalu is busy gathering the villains of ‘Jungle Raj’. After losing prominence in Bihar politics, Lalu is now trying to gather such people.
JDU said – nothing new for RJD
JDU national secretary Rajiv Ranjan says that this is nothing new in RJD politics. No one can deny the fact that there is not a single case registered against Hina Shahab but still people know who are around her. The decision to mend differences with Shahabuddin’s family will not bring any political achievement for the Mahagathbandhan, especially RJD. Voters of Siwan have sent a JDU candidate to the Lok Sabha in the general elections and no one will be satisfied with the Bihar of pre-2005. However, RJD spokespersons refrained from saying anything about this meeting.
Shahabuddin contested his first election in 1990
Actually, Shahabuddin died during the Corona period. Shahabuddin was convicted in more than half a dozen cases including kidnapping and murder. Shahabuddin was an MP four times between 1996 and 2009. Earlier in 1990, Shahabuddin contested the assembly elections for the first time as an independent and won. At that time Shahabuddin was in jail. After that, in the 1995 assembly elections, Shahabuddin got the support of Lalu Yadav. He contested the election for the second time from Jiradei seat on RJD ticket and won. A year later, when the Lok Sabha elections were held in 1996, RJD gave him a ticket from Siwan. He reached Parliament by winning this election.
In 1998, CPI-ML worker Chhotelal Gupta was kidnapped and murdered in Siwan. Shahabuddin was found guilty in this case and sentenced to life imprisonment in 2007. In 2015, Shahabuddin was sentenced to life imprisonment for killing two brothers by pouring acid on them and shooting them.
