‘Police had warned, but we missed it…’, US Secret Service admitted mistake in Trump attack

The US Secret Service has taken responsibility for the security lapse in the attack on former US President Donald Trump. Acting Chief of the Secret Service Ronald Rowe spoke about this during a press conference. Regarding the deadly attack on Trump, he said that the local agencies are not responsible for the security breach in this incident. It was the failure of the Secret Service that such a lapse occurred in the security of the former President. The head of the US Secret Service revealed that the reason for the security failure during the assassination attempt on former President Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania last month was a major communication failure between local authorities and Secret Service agents.

Rowe said at a press conference in Washington that about 30 seconds before the shooting, a local police officer radioed that he saw a man with a gun, but that information never reached the Secret Service because the agents were stationed in a command post separate from their local partners and did not have access to the same radio traffic. “It’s obvious we did not have access to some information,” Rowe said. “Not through anyone’s fault. It just happened that we missed the radio traffic. We have to do a better job of that.”

Rowe cited a need for improved coordination and communication between different agencies. Although a Butler County counter-sniper texted photos of a suspicious person to a Secret Service counterpart 15 minutes before Trump took the stage, the agency’s snipers were unaware of the threat until they were notified a full eight minutes later. The FBI is leading the criminal investigation into the shooting. Rowe said investigators believe “someone actually reported over the radio that they saw a person with a weapon.”

He also acknowledged that agents should have had better cover of the approaches from which the 20-year-old gunman opened fire on Trump, the Republican presidential nominee. He said the Secret Service had “no idea” the shooter had a gun until the shots were fired. The agency initially blamed local law enforcement but later acknowledged that it was ultimately the agency’s responsibility to make sure the building was covered.
