Police are searching for a shooter after seven people were injured on a rural stretch of a major highway in the southern United States state of Kentucky.

The town’s mayor, Randall Weddle, said on Facebook that he was driving on the road just before 6pm (10:00 GMT), not far from London.

Kentucky State Police spokesman Scotty Pennington said earlier that four to six people were injured.

Local news station WYMT said there were “multiple serious injuries” but no deaths were confirmed.

The shooting temporarily shut down Interstate 75, a major north-south highway that cuts across the eastern US in both directions.

Authorities said they were searching for 32-year-old Joseph Koch in a rugged area near the highway. Local media said the shots were fired from a wooded area or an overpass.

“Consider armed and dangerous,” the sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post about the coach. “Do not attempt contact.”
