This year’s Fourth of July fireworks display atop Bend’s iconic Pilot Butte is set to be a spectacular event, culminating in the launch of a record-breaking 16-inch diameter, 55-pound mortar shell. This massive pyrotechnic will more than triple the size of the largest mortar fired during last year’s show.
The annual Pilot Butte fireworks show is a beloved community tradition, presented as a gift to the city by Subaru of Bend and its partners. Preparations for the event are well underway, with construction crews busy setting up the launch site at the summit of Pilot Butte. More than 1,200 shells and 15 separate firing positions will be used to create the dazzling 20-minute display.
To ensure the safety of both the public and the fireworks crew, the Oregon State Parks Department and Bend Fire & Rescue have implemented several restrictions for the event. The access road to the summit will be closed to all vehicle traffic from June 30th through July 5th, and all trails and roadways on Pilot Butte will be closed to the public on July 4th. Only authorized personnel and equipment will be allowed on the summit during this time.

The main parking area at the base of Pilot Butte will remain open for spectators, but the public is advised not to block any emergency access roads or streets. Pets are also not permitted in the park during the fireworks show.
The Pilot Butte fireworks display is made possible with the support of local fire crews from the US Forest Service and Oregon Department of Forestry, who assist with fire safety measures on the butte. Additionally, local Scout troops help with the clean-up process after the show each year.
