A mass shooting in Southwest Philadelphia on the night of July 4th left one person dead and eight others injured during a large gathering described as a “pop-up event.” The incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. near the intersection of 60th Street and Kingsessing Avenue, where a gunman opened fire from the passenger side of a passing SUV, targeting attendees at the event.
The victim who died was a 19-year-old man, shot in the face, and pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital. The other eight victims, aged between 14 and 24, sustained various injuries but were reported to be in stable condition. The police found the first victim lying on the ground during a routine patrol, leading to the discovery of additional victims at the scene and in local hospitals.
Philadelphia Police Inspector Kpana Massaquoi expressed concern over the shooting, especially given the police presence in the area aimed at preventing such violence. As of now, no suspects have been identified, and the motive remains unclear. The shooting comes nearly a year after another mass shooting in the same neighborhood, raising alarms about ongoing violence in the city.
