Patna submerged after heavy rain, water entered the assembly campus and ministers’ bungalows too

After heavy rains in Bihar’s capital Patna, the government’s preparations were exposed. The entire city was flooded. After continuous rains, water was inundated in many places including Bihar Vidhan Sabha premises, bungalows of many ministers nearby and hospitals in Patna.

Heavy rain in Patna

According to the news agency, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar visited different affected areas to take stock of the situation. The city received 41.8 mm of rain, due to which most of the posh areas and low-lying areas including Strand Road, Rajbansi Nagar, Boring Road, Bailey Road and Patliputra Colony were flooded, and vehicular movement was also disrupted.

Waterlogging in ministers’ house

The Bihar Assembly premises were waterlogged. Official bungalows of several state ministers located a few hundred metres away were also flooded. The chief minister inspected pump houses in different areas and directed officials to ensure that there is no waterlogging in the city during heavy rains.

Urban Development and Housing Minister Nitin Nabin called an emergency meeting after visuals and reports of waterlogging emerged on social media from across the city.

Leave of officers cancelled

A statement issued by his office said the minister noted the lack of preparedness and response systems. Nabin said all senior officials on leave should be asked to join duty immediately and no leave should be sanctioned till September 30, according to his office.

Meanwhile, the state government has directed district administration officials across the state to remain alert as the water level of many rivers is rising following continuous rains for the last two days. Officials of the state’s water resources department said on Sunday that the situation is not alarming so far.

Many rivers are in spate

Due to the rains in the last few days, the water level of rivers like Gandak, Kosi, Ganga, Budhi Gandak, Mahananda and Kamla has increased in the state. Rivers are flowing above the danger mark at some places in Patna, Gopalganj, East Champaran and West Champaran. Rivers have also overflown in Bagaha, Purnia, Supaul, Darbhanga, Khagaria and Jhanjharpur in the state.
