Part of the roof of Sonar Fort collapsed, this 870 year old living fort is included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site

The roof of a house in Sonar Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Jaisalmer, collapsed on Thursday. It was a good thing that the house was empty, otherwise a big accident could have happened. A huge crowd of people gathered around when the roof collapsed with a loud bang. On receiving the information, city police chief Sawai Singh reached Sonar Fort with his team and inspected the spot.

During this time, the team of ASI (Archaeological Survey of India) also reached the spot and stopped the traffic by putting up barricades in the street. It is worth mentioning that on 6th August, the wall of the bastion above the ramparts of this Sonar fort fell due to heavy rain. The stones of that wall are still hanging in the air. The Archaeological Department has not yet started the work of its repair and bringing down the stones hanging in the air. However, the district administration has definitely closed the road by putting up barricades on the road.

Two days ago also the wall of the tower of Sonar Fort had collapsed
According to the information received, everyone was terrified by the incident of the roof of Khetpaliya Haveli falling in Vyas Pada of Living Sonar Fort around 2 pm on Thursday. Two days ago, the wall of Sonar Fort also collapsed. The sudden collapse of the roof of the house caused anger among the people here and they reprimanded the Municipal Council and the Archaeological Department. People allege that the administration is not doing the work of removing the old houses. Due to this, the neighbors are in panic.

Vimal Gopa, a resident of Sonar Durg, said that there are more than 30 old houses in the fort. People do not live in them. In such a situation, the dilapidated houses become a danger during the rainy season. The neighbors live in fear that the house may collapse. The Archaeological Department is neither removing them nor allowing them to repair the old houses. In such a situation, everyone is angry.

The roof of an empty mansion collapsed
The house was empty when the roof collapsed. Vimal Gopa said that this mansion was already in a dilapidated condition but the Archaeological Department did not give permission to get it repaired. City Kotwal Sawai Singh said that the house is said to be of Kamal Vyas. The house owner lives outside the fort in Dhibba Pada. The house has been empty for a long time. After the recent rains, the house had become weak and the roof collapsed.

People living in the fort are scared
The city police chief said that as a precaution, the street in which the house has collapsed has been closed by putting barricades and police have been deployed there so that no one goes inside the street. Due to heavy rains in Jaisalmer, the fear of collapse of old dilapidated houses located in Sonar Fort has increased. People living near these houses have lost their sleep at night. They fear that if these houses in narrow streets collapse anytime, they will fall on their houses. This can cause a big accident. In such a situation, everyone has appealed to the administration to remove these dilapidated houses.

This living fort is 870 years old
Jaisalmer’s Sonar Fort is 870 years old. There are 2 wards of the Municipal Council in Sonar Fort. Half of the city’s population lives in the fort itself. That is why it is also called Living Fort. Sonar Fort has also been included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Indian Archaeological Department preserves this fort. In such a situation, any kind of construction etc. is prohibited in this fort.

Many families have migrated from the fort
Many families residing in the fort have migrated and settled in other states. As such, their houses have become dilapidated which has become a danger signal for others. Many times dilapidated houses have collapsed and caused damage. The Municipal Council pastes notices outside the houses because their real owners have never returned here, nor is there any information about them. In such a situation, taking action also becomes illegal. But amidst all this, the people living near these houses live under the shadow of danger during the rainy season.
