Paris Paralympics 2024: India creates history in Paris Paralympics, breaks Tokyo’s record, Praveen’s golden performance in high jump

The stellar performance of Indian players continues in Paris Paralympics 2024. On 6 September (Friday), Indian para-athlete Praveen Kumar (T44) broke the Asian record to win the gold medal in the men’s high jump-T64 event. This was India’s sixth gold at the Paris Paralympics. For the first time, India has won six gold medals in the Paralympic Games. Earlier, India had won 5 gold medals at the Tokyo Paralympics.

India is currently at number 14 in the medal tally

21-year-old Praveen won the gold medal with a best jump of 2.08 meters. In this event, Derek Lockident of USA won the silver and Temurbek Giyazov of Uzbekistan won the bronze medal. Derek’s best was 2.06 meters. Temurbek jumped a best of 2.03 meters to win the bronze. Praveen, who was born with short legs, is a resident of Noida.

T64 includes athletes with mild to moderate movement in one lower leg or absence of one or both legs below the knee.

With Praveen Kumar’s gold medal, India’s medal tally in Paris Paralympics 2024 has now reached 26. India has so far won 6 gold, 8 silver and 12 bronze medals. India has come 14th in the medal tally with 26 medals. This was India’s 14th medal in athletics in the current Paralympic Games.

India has performed its best ever in the Paralympic Games. In Tokyo Paralympics 2020, India won 5 gold, 8 silver and 6 bronze medals. With a total of 19 medals, this was India’s best performance in the Paralympic Games. Para athlete Muralikant Petkar won India’s first medal in the Paralympic Games in the year 1972. Muralikant Petkar is the same player on whose life the film ‘Chandu Champion’ was also released recently.
