goa illegal land acquisition case, Goa’s Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai has criticised Chief Minister Pramod Sawant for failing to fulfil his promises on the issue of land grabbing in Goa. Sardesai said, “The one-member commission appointed to investigate came, took the commission and went away.” He underlined the limited jurisdiction of the commission, saying that the commission’s job is only to identify the shortcomings within the department, while it has no real authority to take action. Sardesai also criticised the slow progress in legal actions and said that out of 93 cases of land grabbing, FIRs have been filed in only 22 cases.

In August 2020, at an event, CM Sawant had assured the people of Goa that the land grabbed and sold by land grabbers would be returned to its rightful owners by the SIT. The opposition alleges that even after nearly four years, this promise remains largely unfulfilled, leading to strong criticism from opposition leaders.

A one-member commission headed by Justice VK Jadhav (Retd) was appointed in June 2022 to investigate allegations of fraudulent land deals in Goa. The commission’s job was to investigate fraudulent land deals involving forgery of archival documents. Despite its formation and submission of the report to CM Sawant on November 1, 2023, no significant action was taken in the matter. MLA Nilesh Cabral also echoed Sardesai and raised the question that if there is a need to go to court even after having an SIT, then what is the use of SIT? All eyes are on how Chief Minister Sawant retaliates to these allegations of the opposition. Obviously, politics may heat up further in the coming days in cases of illegal land acquisition.
