Now Muizzu’s new ploy! Maldives opposition accused of economic and financial coup

Maldives President Mohammad Muizzu has accused the opposition of plotting an economic coup. Muizzu says that strict action will be taken against those plotting to topple his government.

According to the report, on Sunday, the Maldives government-owned Bank of Maldives (BML) banned foreign transactions from existing and new debit cards linked to MVR accounts. Along with this, the monthly limit of standard and gold credit cards was also reduced to $ 100. However, this decision was withdrawn within a few hours.

Muizzu said at a meeting of the ruling People’s National Congress on Monday night that as soon as he became aware of the situation, he worked with his ministers to find a solution to the bank’s issue. The bank’s decision was against his advice. The Bank of Maldives’ decision was announced despite his order. It is now being investigated.

President Muizzu said that a select few people had attempted an economic coup as part of a complete strategy. Whatever happened here, the whole matter will become clear after a little thought. This was without any doubt an attempt at a coup.

He said that many people have raised the question that why did a government-controlled bank take such a decision? But they do not know that the government does not have a majority in the board of directors of BML. Currently, there are only four government directors. The remaining five directors are not associated with the government, so we do not have a majority. We have nominated two directors. But their appointment will take a few weeks.

The opposition said that the government’s allegations are absurd

Meanwhile, Fayyaz Ismail, chairman of the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party, said that these developments show that a coup attempt was being made within President Muizzu’s government. There appears to be no role of external forces in this.

However, he rubbished Muizzu’s allegations of the opposition plotting a coup and said that the problem is within the government. Something is happening inside. We may see a coup in the next few days.

He said that when the head of a country alleges that the bank which he controls has conspired with the opposition to stage a coup, then this is a big allegation against the Bank of Maldives. Muizzu is known for his pro-China inclination. He was sworn in as President in November last year.
