After Delhi, Karnataka and Telangana, now free bus service for women is going to start in Andhra Pradesh as well. Chandrababu Naidu’s government has announced to make state transport bus service free for women from 15 August.

Which buses have free service

According to reports, the scheme will be applicable in state-run Palle Velugu and Express buses operated by the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC). The scheme also includes provisions for inter-state travel. The free travel is limited to Andhra Pradesh borders, passengers can travel in Express and Palle Velugu buses up to the state borders without any fare.

APSRTC Preparation

APSRTC officials have sought a report on the implementation of the scheme in Karnataka and Telangana and details about the number of women travelling per day, burden on the government, potential problems during implementation, etc. As per estimates, the implementation of the scheme in Telangana may cost around Rs 1,500 crore per year and the state government has released Rs 374 crore as subsidy when the scheme is launched in December 2023.

One of the six promises of TDP

Revenue Minister Satya Prasad Angani in the Chandrababu Naidu government announced free bus service for women. Free bus service for women is one of the promises made by TDP during the elections under the ‘Super Six’ schemes. The Super Six schemes promised by TDP include increased pension for senior citizens, mega DSC notifications, free travel for women in RTC buses, 20 lakh jobs for youth in 5 years, Rs 3,000 allowance for unemployed, maternity grant of Rs 15,000 per year for every mother.
