Not just Kangana Ranaut’s ‘Emergency’, Vidya Balan’s series on Indira Gandhi has also been pending for years

Kangana Ranaut’s film ‘Emergency’ has been postponed after a lot of uproar. The actress herself has announced this. On Friday, the actress tweeted that she will soon announce the new release date of the film. Kangana said that she is sorry to tell this. In ‘Emergency’, Kangana Ranaut will be seen playing the role of former Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi. The Sikh community had opposed this picture.

Vidya was going to play the role of Indira

But did you know that even before Kangana Ranaut started her film ‘Emergency’ in 2018, a project was announced? Vidya Balan had acquired the rights of author Sagarika Ghosye’s 2017 book ‘Indira: India’s Most Powerful Prime Minister’. Vidya said that it was her dream to play the role of Indira Gandhi on screen. Her husband Siddharth Roy Kapur was going to produce this film under his banner Roy Kapur Films.

In 2019, Vidya Balan talked about this picture in an interview given to Firstpost. The actress had told that the makers are planning to make it as a web series after the film. It is being directed by Ritesh Batra, who made ‘The Lunchbox’. Vidya had said, ‘Our web series on Indira Gandhi is taking more time than we thought. Its script is being rewritten according to the web. Its final version will come to me soon. Web is a different thing, so it takes time to prepare things for it.’

The actress further said, ‘I was also offered this role by different people five years ago. But I told them that I cannot do this film unless you take the required permission. But all this is much easier for the web.’

Vidya Balan had got this role before Kangana

In the same interview, Vidya Balan revealed why she did not play the role of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa in the film ‘Thalaivi’. Vidya had refused to do director AL Vijay’s film. She told in the interview that she was already preparing to play the role of Indira Gandhi. In such a situation, she did not want to play the role of two political women together.

Kangana Ranaut played the role of Jayalalithaa in the 2021 film ‘Thalaivi’. Now she will be seen playing the role of Indira Gandhi in ‘Emergency’. After the trailer of Kangana’s film was released, Shiromani Akali Dal had demanded not to give the film a censor certificate. They said that this film shows the Sikh community in a wrong way and is objectionable. After this, its certificate roll was taken. After the matter went to the Bombay High Court, CBFC was ordered to decide on giving the certificate. The hearing on the censor certificate of ‘Emergency’ will be held on September 19.
