Indian boxer Nishant Dev’s dream of winning a medal in Paris Olympics 2024 was shattered. Nishant Dev faced Marco Verde of Mexico in the 71 kg weight category of men’s boxing, where he lost 1-4. If Nishant had won the quarter-finals, he would have been sure to win at least a bronze medal. But he lost even after taking the lead in the first round. India has won three bronze medals in Paris Olympics so far, which have come in shooting.

Fans are angry after Nishant’s defeat!

Nishant won the opening round easily. Four out of five judges gave Nishant the upper hand in the first round. He then appeared to be in full control of the fight in the second round as he landed several big jab hooks on the Mexican player, yet the judges surprisingly favoured Alvarez in that round. Only two judges gave the decision in favour of Nishant in the second round.

However, he could not maintain the momentum in the third round. In the third round, all five judges gave the verdict in favour of Verede. When the third round ended, Nishant Dev looked quite confident. He was sure that he had won the match, but the decision that came was surprising. Nishant had lost the quarterfinal match 1-4. The commentators were also surprised by this decision.

Star boxer Vijender Singh, who won bronze for India in the Olympics, was also surprised by the scoring system in this match. Vijender wrote on Instagram, ‘I don’t know what the scoring system is, but I think it was a very close match. He played very well… no problem brother.’ Reactions of fans have also come on social media. Fans believe that Nishant has been defeated deliberately even though he deserved the victory.

Left right and center for the first time everyone is united because everyone knows Nishant Dev has won #boxingHis performance in the match was excellent but due to unfair umpiring the judges took away his medal. #cheat #Olympic Games    pic.twitter.com/9cpxeNdEEV pic.twitter.com/sKp31Lfr2A

This is robbery!! Nishant Dev was the clear winner. Boxing is so rigged that no one knows how the judges are scoring. No transparency, just chaos and bias and luck based. WWE matches make more sense than this buffoonery they are calling boxing right now!#boxing #Olympics #Paris2024 pic.twitter.com/qyra7K7qVV

Overall it was a close fight and the scoring proved it. Not a single judge gave all three rounds to any boxer. The German judge, who gave the opening round to Wrede, decided in India’s favour in the second round. In amateur boxing, most scoring punches are from close range and directed to the body.

I never understood the scoring system of Plus-2 physics and boxing 🤦#NishantDev #boxing #Paris2024 pic.twitter.com/LeHFLVJano

Nishant 💔

How can you ignore Nishant Dev’s dominance in the first two rounds? He completely demolished the other player. There was no way he would lose Round 2. Losing Judges#NishantDev #Paris2024 #boxing pic.twitter.com/HIDaaL3FXI

Some of Nishant Dev’s hooks or cross hits hit Verde’s face. Some hit the gloves and they were not scoring punches. He put Verde where he wanted in the first round. Then in the second round, Nishant’s performance was overall good. However, he could not maintain that pressure in the last round.

Who is Nishant Dev?

Nishant Dev was born on 23 December 2000 in Karnal, Haryana. Nishant started boxing in the year 2012, inspired by his uncle, who was a professional boxer. Nishant then started training at Karnal’s Karna Stadium under coach Surendra Chauhan. Later, Nishant shifted to Vijayanagar in Karnataka, where he trained at the Inspire Institute of Sports (ISS).

At the age of 19, Nishant represented Karnataka in the Senior National Championship, but lost in the quarter-finals. However, his game impressed Santiago Nieva, the then High Performance Director of Indian Boxing. Santiago took him to the Indian camp, where he started training with experienced boxers. Nishant made his mark at the national level. In 2021 and 2022, he won the gold medal at the National Championship. Interestingly, he has never competed in the junior category at the international level.

Nishant Dev’s boxing journey has not been easy. In 2010, Nishant had a tragic accident when his right shoulder dislocated due to a fall from the stairs. Due to this, a rod was inserted in his shoulder. Nishant was then 10 years old. In early 2022, his old injury resurfaced. Due to which his bone marrow got infected. Despite the first symptoms of this injury, he continued to participate in tournaments. He underwent surgery in March 2022 and spent most of the year in rehab, due to which he had to stay out of the Birmingham Commonwealth Games that year.

Nishant Dev made a strong comeback through the National Boxing Championship held in Hisar in January 2023. Nishant won a bronze medal at the IBA Men’s World Boxing Championship held in Tashkent in May 2023, which was his first medal at the international level. Nishant qualified for the Paris Olympics 2024 through the second World Boxing Qualifying Tournament held in Bangkok in May this year. In the decisive match, Nishant defeated Madagascar boxer Vasile Sebotari 5-0.
