Nipah virus alert in Kerala.

Kerala Nipah Virus, Kerala Health Minister Veena George on Saturday confirmed Nipah infection in a 14-year-old boy from Malappuram district. Speaking to the media, the Health Minister said that the Pune-based National Institute of Virology has confirmed the infection in the boy, who is currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital. She said, the victim will be shifted to the Government Medical College in Kozhikode.

The health minister said that contact tracing of the victim has been initiated. People at high risk due to his contact have already been isolated and their samples have been sent for testing. George said that the victim boy is being treated and is on ventilator. The minister said that the epicentre of the infection was Pandikkad and precautionary measures have already been taken.

Advice to people to wear masks

The Health Minister has asked people in the area and nearby hospitals that have been the center of infection to wear masks in public places and avoid meeting patients in hospitals. Let us tell you, the state government had recently announced that a special action plan is being prepared to prevent the outbreak of Nipah, which has troubled the state on four occasions in the past. Cases of Nipah infection were reported in Kozhikode district in the year 2018, 2021 and 2023 and in Ernakulam district in 2019. The presence of antibodies of Nipah virus was detected in bats from Kozhikode, Wayanad, Idukki, Malappuram and Ernakulam districts.
