The New York Times faced intense backlash for publishing an opinion piece the day after an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. The NYT’s Sunday Opinion cover page carried a message urging readers not to vote for Trump in the upcoming 2024 election, claiming he has “betrayed America” and “failed all tests” .
Elon Musk and other prominent figures strongly condemned the NYT’s “inhumane” and “callous” response, with Rep. Brian Mast of Florida accusing the newspaper of “failing the test of leadership” . Some critics claimed the NYT removed the American flag from the cover photo and avoided using the word “assassination” in their reporting on the attack .

Political violence expert Arie Perliger warned that if Trump had been fatally injured, it could have “unleashed a new level of anger, frustration, resentment, hostility that we haven’t seen for many, many years in the U.S.” . He said the assassination attempt may validate a narrative among Trump supporters that they are being “delegitimized” and prevented from competing in the political process .
The NYT has not responded to the widespread criticism of its opinion piece. Meanwhile, the Secret Service is facing scrutiny over the security lapses that allowed the shooting to occur .
