Hearing on NEET case in Supreme Court

NEET-UG row, The Supreme Court will hear several petitions regarding the medical entrance exam NEET-UG 2024 today. These petitions include one alleging irregularities and malpractices in the NEET exam held on May 5 and also seeking direction from the court to conduct the exam again. A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Mishra will review 38 petitions related to the exam, which is a nationwide test for admission to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH and other medical courses in government and private institutions across the country.

Paper leak and irregularities in giving grace marks

Allegations of several irregularities, including paper leaks and irregularities in awarding grace marks, led to protests across India. 67 students initially scored a perfect 720 marks, with the six top scorers being from the same centre in Haryana, raising suspicion of irregularities. The results were declared on 4 June, 10 days before the scheduled date. The National Testing Agency (NTA), which conducts the NEET-UG, refused to cancel the exam, citing lack of evidence of massive privacy violations and harm to thousands of honest candidates. Meanwhile, the issue echoed in Parliament as well.

The government said that lakhs of honest candidates will suffer losses

The government said that cancelling the exam altogether would cause huge loss to lakhs of honest candidates who will attempt the question paper in 2024. At the same time, the NTA’s affidavit described the cancellation of the exam as extremely harmful to the public interest and the career prospects of eligible candidates. The agency rejected the claims of widespread malpractice as baseless and misleading and said that the exam was conducted fairly and safely.

The Supreme Court had sought an answer

On June 11, while considering a similar petition, the Supreme Court had said that the sanctity of the examination has been affected and we want answers, along with this the court had sought a reply from the Center and NTA. Justice Amanullah told the NTA lawyer, it is not that simple. Because you have done this. The sanctity has been affected, so we want answers. The petitions have requested cancellation of the exam, re-examination and a court-monitored investigation. More than 23 lakh candidates had taken the exam at 4,750 centers in 571 cities.
