NEET-UG exam will not be cancelled. The Supreme Court made it clear that there will be no re-examination. The court also clarified about a question in Physics. The court said that two answers to one question cannot be correct. The results of students who had chosen different options in this confusion will be revised. The results of more than 4 lakh students will be affected by this decision of the court. This also includes those 44 candidates who topped the NEET exam with 720/720. Since the court has decided to cancel the grace marks given to them.

In fact, on Tuesday, the Supreme Court rejected the petition demanding cancellation of the exam. The Supreme Court said that there is no solid evidence to prove that there was systemic irregularity in the exam or the sanctity of the entire exam was violated. The court further said, there is no doubt that the paper was leaked in Hazaribagh and Patna and 155 students benefited from it. The court said, the consequences of REET can be serious. It will affect 24 lakh students and medical studies.

Why were grace marks given to the students?

The Supreme Court has told the National Testing Agency that only the answer given by the expert team of IIT Delhi in the Physics question paper will be considered correct. Accordingly, an order has been given to revise the results of four lakh students. Initially, NTA had considered two options as correct answers due to discrepancies between the old and new NCERT books and grace marks were given to the students accordingly. After the report of the expert team, the court clarified that two options of a question cannot be considered as the correct answer.

The court’s decision will affect the results of 4.20 lakh students

This decision of the court will affect the marks of more than 4 lakh 20 thousand students, who had chosen the option that was earlier considered correct. Five marks of each of these students will be deducted. The effect of which will be that their overall ranking will be greatly affected. According to the new classification, the toppers declared earlier will be re-evaluated, after which only 17 students will be considered toppers instead of 61. Because the 44 students who were given grace marks on a question of Physics will now have to bear a penalty of minus 5 marks.

Expert panel said- only the fourth option is correct

Candidates who have scored 720 marks will now have their marks reduced to 715, which will lead to a further drop of at least 100 marks in their rank. Earlier, an expert panel of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi submitted its report to the Supreme Court on July 23. In this report, IIT Delhi had said that the fourth option of a controversial physics question in the NEET-UG paper is the correct answer. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also said in a press conference on Tuesday, the new final scores will be released in a day or two.

Sources in the Union Education Ministry said that the withdrawal of this anomaly will affect the ranks of 4.2 lakh students. Their overall rank will also decrease. The new merit list will have the final marks and the rank will be calculated accordingly. The source said that the current cut-off for admission to government medical colleges will be above 550 scores. The controversy arose from a particular question in Physics, which allegedly had two valid answers.

That question in NEET paper which became controversial?
– Statement I: Atoms are electrically neutral because they have equal numbers of positive and negative charges.
– Statement II: Atoms of each element are stable and emit their own characteristic spectrum.

These options were given…

A- The first one is correct but the second one is wrong.
B- The first one is wrong but the second one is correct.
C- Both the first and second statements are correct.
D- Both statements are wrong.

When the answer key was released, the NEET website showed option (A) as the correct answer. However, many students opposed the answer key based on the information given in the old version of NCERT. That is, both the statements were correct according to the old version. Therefore, based on this logic, NTA gave grace marks to those students who had chosen option (C) in their answer.

While the petitioners said that NTA cannot accept both the answers as correct. NEET instructions ask to follow the latest NCERT edition. To resolve the matter, the Supreme Court sought expert opinion from IIT Delhi. The court requested the director to form a team of three subject experts to determine the correct answer and submit a report by noon on July 23. Sources have also told India Today that NEET UG counseling will now start as usual, as there is no chance of re-examination for all students.
