Supreme Court

NEET-UG hearing

NEET and Shravan In SC: During the hearing on NEET-UG 2024 in the Supreme Court on Tuesday, there was a heated argument between Chief Justice (CJI) DY Chandrachud and a lawyer who was adamant on speaking before his turn came. On this, the CJI warned him to throw him out of the courtroom. Justice Chandrachud said that he would not allow any lawyer to do as he pleases in the court. The Chief Justice reprimanded advocate Mathews J Nedumpara, appearing for some petitioners, when he repeatedly urged that he be allowed to argue while senior advocate Narendra Hooda, the lead counsel for the petitioners, was about to present his arguments.

I’m warning you…

Justice Chandrachud told Nedumpara that the bench will allow him to argue after Hooda presents his arguments. The bench also comprised Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Mishra. The Chief Justice said, please sit down. I will have to take you out of the court. He said angrily, I am warning you. However, Nedumpara continued to complain that he was not allowed to speak in the court. Angered by this, the Chief Justice said, please call the security personnel. We will ask them to take him out of the court.

The lawyer said, you are being unfair

The lawyer turned to his colleagues, to which Justice Chandrachud said, “You will not talk in the gallery. You will listen to me. I am in charge of my court.” The angry lawyer reluctantly said that he was leaving the courtroom but the Chief Justice was being unjust. Justice Chandrachud said, “Mr. Matthews, now I will be forced to say something which will be very unpleasant. Please be quiet. Sit down here. If you want to leave, it is your wish.”

CJI said- I have been in the judiciary for the last 24 years

The CJI told Nedumpara that he cannot interrupt Hooda when he is arguing. He told Nedumpara, I will listen to you. But I will listen to you after Hooda’s arguments are over. Nedumpara said that whenever he wants to speak, the bench stops him and the fact that he is the most senior among the lawyers present in the courtroom is ignored. Chief Justice Chandrachud said angrily, I am in charge of procedure in this court and I have been in the judiciary for the last 24 years. I will not allow any lawyer to do as he pleases in the court.

Lawyer Nedumpara returned and apologized

Before leaving the courtroom, Nedumpara said in a loud voice, I have seen the judiciary since 1979. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, who appeared on behalf of the Center in the case, called the lawyer’s behavior contemptuous. Nedumpara returned to the court after some time and apologized to the bench.
