US space agency NASA will send India’s Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla to the International Space Station (ISS). ISRO gave this information in a statement on Friday. ISRO’s Human Space Flight Center (HSFC) has signed a Space Flight Agreement (SFA) with US-based Axiom Space for its upcoming Axiom-4 mission to the ISS, which will have two Indian prime and backup mission pilots.

According to the statement, Group Captain Shukla will be the primary mission pilot, while another IAF officer, Group Captain Prashant Balakrishnan Nair, will be the backup mission pilot. Both the officers are also known as ‘Gaganyatri’. Their training will begin in the first week of August.

Last year, four test pilots were selected from the Air Force and their primary training for the Gaganyaan mission began at ISRO’s Astronaut Training Centre in Bengaluru. The Gaganyaan mission is an ambitious programme aimed at demonstrating India’s human space flight capability. The mission plans to send a three-member crew to a 400-km orbit for a three-day mission that will culminate in a safe return to Earth in Indian waters.
