CM Yogi’s big decision: Every shop on the Kanwar route will have to put a nameplate

Kanwar Yatra 2024, On Friday, the Uttar Pradesh government announced a slew of measures to ensure the smooth conduct of the Kanwar Yatra, which begins on July 22. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordered that food and beverage shops on the Kanwar routes display the name and identity of the operator/owner so that the sanctity of the pilgrims’ faith is maintained. Additionally, action will be taken against those selling halal-certified products.

This decision has been taken for the convenience of the devotees

Earlier, the Muzaffarnagar police had urged all eateries on the Kanwar route to voluntarily display the names of their owners and employees, saying that the purpose of this order is not to create any kind of religious discrimination, but only for the convenience of devotees. Saharanpur DIG Ajay Kumar Sahni said that there have been cases in the past when Kanwariyas have had arguments over the rate list of food at hotels and dhabas. Apart from this, there have also been cases where non-veg is available at a hotel/dhaba or a person from another community has opened a hotel/dhaba under another name and this has led to a dispute. In view of this, it has been decided that the name of the owner/proprietor of the shops/hotels/dhabas will be clearly written on the board, the rate list will be written clearly and the names of the workers will also be written clearly, so that there is no problem of any kind…Everyone has been talked to and all the hotels/dhabas have agreed to this…This decision has been taken for our Kanwar route.

However, the move has been sharply criticised by opposition parties, who have accused the UP government of targeting a community. Former Samajwadi Party MP Dr ST Hasan said that the message is being given to boycott Muslims and visit Hindu shops. How long will this communal thinking continue? Unfortunately, such incidents are happening… a gulf is being created between the two communities. Such orders should be revoked. UP Congress state president Ajay Rai said that this is absolutely impractical. They are trying to spoil the feeling of brotherhood in society, trying to create distance between people. This should be revoked immediately.

Akhilesh called the order a social crime

Earlier on Thursday, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav termed the order a social crime and sought the court’s intervention, questioning the intent behind the government and administration’s action. What will be known by the name of a person whose name is Guddu, Munna, Chhotu or Fateh? The honourable court should take suo motu cognizance and investigate the government’s intent behind such administration and take appropriate punitive action. He said in a post on X that such orders are social crimes which want to spoil the peaceful atmosphere of harmony.

Owaisi attacks CM Yogi

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi condemned the order, comparing it to apartheid and Nazi-era practices and challenged Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to issue a written order if he has the guts. Addressing a press conference, Owaisi said, “Looking at this order of the Uttar Pradesh government, it seems as if Hitler’s spirit has entered them. Will you give so much importance to a visit that you will ruin the livelihood of others? Will you work only for one community? Where is the Constitution? I challenge Yogi Adityanath to issue a written order if he has the guts. There is clear discrimination against Muslims.”

On Thursday, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath reviewed the preparations for the Kanwar Yatra starting from July 22 and gave directions to the ministers of water, power, urban development and energy to ensure peace and security during the event. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath issued instructions for the Kanwar Yatra, Sawan Mela and other festivals in the upcoming Shravan month, due to which the Urban Development Department issued instructions aimed at increasing cleanliness, lighting and drinking water arrangements.
