Kanwar Yatra dispute in Supreme Court

Supreme Court on the dispute over nameplates for Kanwar Yatra.

Kanwar Yatra name plate controversy, After the Uttar Pradesh government suffered a major setback over the Kanwad Yatra nameplate controversy, the written order of the Supreme Court has come to light. The court has clearly stated in its order that the government or the police cannot force shop owners or their employees to reveal their names/identities. Let us tell you, the Yogi government had ordered the shop owners to write their names on the Kanwad Yatra route. The Supreme Court put an interim stay on this order. The next hearing in this case will be on Friday.

The Supreme Court has said in its written order that the authorities can ensure that the devotees get vegetarian food and hygiene standards are maintained. In this regard, the competent authority can also issue orders under the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006 and the Street Vendor Act 2014, but the police cannot usurp the power that the competent authority has without any legal basis. That is, the police has no legal basis to take action in such a case.

Shop owners can tell you what kind of food they are serving

The Supreme Court said, those selling food items (dhabas, restaurants, fruit-vegetable vendors, hawkers) can tell what type of food they are serving to the Kanwadis. Is it vegetarian or non-vegetarian. But they cannot be forced to reveal the name/identity of the shop owners or the people working for them.

Supreme Court issued notice

While hearing the petitions on the nameplate dispute, the Supreme Court has also issued a notice to the government. A bench of Justices Rishikesh Roy and SVN Bhatti issued notices to the governments of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Madhya Pradesh and asked them to respond to the petitions challenging the directive. Let us tell you, Ujjain Municipal Corporation in Madhya Pradesh also directed shopkeepers on Saturday to display names and mobile numbers outside their establishments.
