Nag Panchami 2024: According to the Hindu calendar, Nag Panchami is celebrated on the fifth day of the Shukla Paksha of Shravan. This year, Nag Panchami is being celebrated on 9th August i.e. today. Nag Panchami is also known as Naga Panchami. On Nag Panchami, along with the worship of Lord Shiva, the snake deity that adorns his neck is duly worshipped.
Nag Panchami is dedicated to the worship of snakes or the serpent god. Various rituals are performed on this day to honor the serpent god. They are believed to provide protection and prosperity to the devotees. In many regions, live cobras or naags are also worshiped and milk is offered to them. Nag Panchami Story
According to the mythological tale, Janamejaya was the son of King Parikshit, the grandson of Arjun. When Janamejaya came to know that the cause of his father’s death was snakebite, he organized a yagna called Sarpasatra to take revenge. To protect the snakes, the yagna was stopped by sage Aastik Muni on the fifth day of Shukla Paksha of Shravan month and the snakes were protected. Due to this, the clan of snakes was saved by saving Takshak snake. To save the snakes from the heat of the fire, the sage poured raw milk on them. From then on, Nagpanchami started being celebrated. The tradition of offering milk to the snake god started from there.
