Students have announced Nabanna March regarding the Kolkata rape case and the students are demanding resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. After the announcement of Nabanna Abhiyan, security has been increased in West Bengal and 6000 policemen have been deployed for the protest. Also, Howrah Bridge has been sealed for the protest and many layers of security have been increased in Kolkata. Nabanna Abhiyan is now being discussed all over the country. In such a situation, the question is what is this Nabanna and when has Nabanna been protested before.

What is Nabanna?

Let us tell you that Nabanna is the name of a building and it is in Howrah. Actually, the building of the state secretariat is called Nabanna Bhawan. Now there are preparations to surround it, in view of which the security of the secretariat has been increased and fortified. This is a 14-storey building, which houses the offices of the West Bengal government. This is a blue and white colored building. It is said that the office of the Chief Minister of West Bengal is on its top floor and the office of the Home Secretary is on the 13th floor. Apart from this, the office of the Home Department is on the fourth and fifth floors.

Let us tell you that in the year 2013, Mamata Banerjee shifted her office here. Earlier, the office of the Chief Minister of West Bengal used to be the Writers Building. There is also a lawn in front of the Chief Minister’s chamber, from where a beautiful view of the city can be seen. Next to it is a visiting room for ministers and other officials. Along with this, there is also a conference room for cabinet officials. There are special security arrangements for this building and three private agencies also look after its security.

What is the meaning of Nabanna?

If we talk about the word Nabanna, then it is a kind of harvest festival and it is very important for the farmers. It is celebrated at the time when new rice arrives. It is celebrated from West Bengal to Bangladesh. It is called Nobo-Onno i.e. new rice. That is, when new rice arrives, farmers celebrate this time as Nabanna.

Was there a Nabanna campaign in 2021 as well?

Let us tell you that the Nabanna demonstration also took place in the year 2021. It was carried out by the Students Federation of India (SFI), Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), Left Front, other leftist parties and student organizations. This movement was also carried out for the alleged failures of the West Bengal government. But, this demonstration turned into a conflict and there was a lot of uproar.
