‘Nabanna campaign is illegal, permission was not taken for the rally…’, Kolkata Police claimed a violent conspiracy

The West Bengal Police on Monday said that the ‘Nabanna Abhiyaan’ demonstration organised by students demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is illegal. The police said that no permission has been taken for the demonstration scheduled for Tuesday, August 27, and based on intelligence inputs, violence and chaos are expected during this demonstration.

Student organizations are going to organize a rally!
The reaction came after some reports said that an organisation called ‘Paschimbanga Chhatra Samaj’ would hold a rally to Nabanna, the state secretariat, demanding Mamata Banerjee’s resignation. The rally is being held in the case of the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. However, the police said that they have no knowledge of this student organisation and no one has sought permission from them for this demonstration.

Police said- we were not given permission
Manoj Verma, West Bengal’s Additional Director General and Inspector General of Police (Law and Order), said that Nabanna is a secure-protected area, and permission has to be taken before any organisation can hold a protest there. “We have come to know about the ‘Nabanna Abhiyan’ from media reports and social media, but no organisation has sought permission from us yet. Nabanna is a restricted area. If they want to hold a protest there, they have to take permission from the police beforehand. The police will then take a decision on it,” he said.

Verma further said, “No one can organise this demonstration without permission as it is illegal. If they want, we can arrange to hold it at some other place. We also have inputs that the organisers want to create chaos so that the police take action and they can take advantage of it. This input has been shared with all our units.”

Section 163 is already applicable in the area
The West Bengal government has already imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 in the area around Nabanna, prohibiting the gathering of five or more people. Verma assured the students that those appearing for the UGC NET exam on Tuesday will not face any inconvenience. He said adequate arrangements have been made for the smooth conduct of the exam so that students and the general public do not face any problems. “An exam is also scheduled on the same day. We will help the students and the general public so that they do not face any inconvenience,” he said.

The event was not organised by BJP, but we support those who raise their voice against injustice: Rahul Sinha
On the other hand, BJP leader Rahul Sinha has said that the ‘Nabanna Abhiyan’ demonstration has not been organized by the BJP, but the party supports all those who are raising their voice against this injustice and this matter. He said, “Mamata Banerjee wants to politicize this issue, while it is an issue of a social mass movement.”
Rahul Sinha further said, “Mamata Banerjee wants to stop this rally, but she should explain why she held the ‘Mahakaran Rally’ in 1993, which led to so many deaths?”
