The body of a 31-year-old accused arrested in a murder case in Morena district of Madhya Pradesh was found hanging in a police station on Sunday morning. Police suspect that it is a case of suicide. Meanwhile, the opposition party Congress said that the deceased was a Dalit and claimed that the police is targeting people of the Dalit community. After the uproar in this case, three policemen have been suspended.
SDM Bhupendra Singh Kushwaha told news agency PTI that the body of Balkrishna Jatav alias Sunny was found hanging from a cloth tied to the window inside the Civil Lines police station at around 5.30 am. He said Sunny, a resident of Gwalior, was arrested on Saturday for murdering his brother-in-law, whose body was found near a canal last December. However, Sunny’s family members claimed that he was taken into custody four days ago.
Three policemen including the station in-charge suspended
After visiting the spot, ASP Arvind Thakur said that SP Sameer Saurabh has suspended the station in-charge and Inspector Rambabu Yadav, a head constable and a constable in the case of custodial death. However, prima facie it is a case of suicide. He said that as per the guidelines of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), a judicial magistrate will investigate the custodial death.
Action will be taken on the basis of post-mortem report: ASP
The ASP said that the post-mortem of the deceased is being done by a panel of doctors. Action will be taken according to whatever evidence comes to light. He further said that Sunny has a criminal record and four to five cases have already been registered against him in various police stations.
Congress’s demand- SP should be dismissed
Meanwhile, the Congress has demanded the dismissal of the Morena Superintendent of Police over the incident. MP Congress chief Jitu Patwari wrote on Twitter, “Is being a Dalit a crime in MP? After Katni, another Dalit has come under the police’s radar.”
A Dalit woman and her grandson were brutally beaten up in police custody in Katni, the video of which went viral last week. In that case too, action was taken against a woman police officer and other policemen.

Jeetu Patwari asked why the BJP government is spreading so much hatred against people with Dr. Ambedkar’s ideology. He has threatened to go on an indefinite hunger strike if the Morena SP is not dismissed and a murder case is not registered against the policemen. During this, he also spoke to the deceased’s elder brother over the phone. Heavy police force has been deployed around the police station after Sunny’s family and acquaintances protested alleging foul play in his death.
