Mongolia refuses to arrest Putin for visiting despite Ukraine’s demands

Mongolia has denied making the arrests Vladimir Putin Despite an international warrant being issued for him for alleged war crimes.

Kiev has urged Mongolia to implement the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) arrest warrant, insisting it has an “obligation” to do so given that it is a party to the court’s Rome Statute.

But the Russian leader was instead greeted by a guard of honor as he landed in the Mongolian capital of Ulaanbaatar on Monday to begin his high-profile trip.

Amnesty International warned that Mongolia’s failure to arrest Putin could undermine the court’s legitimacy and embolden the Russian leader.

“President Putin is a fugitive from justice,” Altantuya Batdorge, Amnesty International Mongolia’s executive director, said in a statement.

“Any trip to an ICC member state that does not end in an arrest would encourage President Putin’s current actions and should be seen as part of a strategic effort to undermine the work of the ICC.”

last year, The ICC issued a warrant Vladimir Putin was accused of kidnapping children from Ukraine for his arrest.

It has since banned international visits to countries that are not party to the Rome Statute.

But that changed on Monday when he visited for the first time a country that is a member of the court and, therefore, is supposed to act on the court’s warrant.

However, those seeking to bring Putin to justice had little hope that the country would comply with the court’s wishes.

Mongolia is a landlocked country Very dependent on Moscow For fuel and electricity.

He has also refrained from condemning it Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and abstained during the vote on the war at the United Nations.

There was a ceremony in Ulaanbaatar for Putin on Monday by a uniformed honor guard dressed in the style of Mongol Empire founder Genghis Khan.

The Russian leader was joined by Mongolian President Ukhna Khurelsukh as he walked up the red-carpeted steps of the government palace.

Putin claims the visit comes as Russian troops are “advancing rapidly” in eastern Ukraine, as it continues its assault on the city of Pokrovsk – a key logistics hub targeted by Moscow for months.

Volodymyr Zelenskiy acknowledged that Ukrainian forces have faced difficulties on the eastern frontespecially near Pokrovsk, but stated that Russian forces had not advanced for two days.
