Only in New York can you get an epic burger for less than the cost of a subway ride.
The latest episode of Munchies shows word of mouth Takes viewers inside the Jubilee Marketplace in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. The craft and trade grocery store also has a cafe called 20 gramsHome of the $2.55 Cheeseburger.
Then word got out about the cheap food Eat honest Posted a video about the theft, which quickly went viral.
“The next day, we had a lot of customers come to support,” owner Young Kim told VICE. “I was very grateful and overwhelmed and overworked. In just one weekend, I think we made about 4,000 burgers.”
Now, the restaurant has served more than 100,000 burgers, so the reviews can be raved about. One local called the burger a “steal,” while a French tourist noted that he had traveled from Manhattan just to try the “really delicious” sandwich.
So what makes it so great?
“It’s really like the old-school cheeseburger they used to make, but with our twist,” Kim said. “We use Martin potato buns, we use local beef that’s grass-fed, just the highest quality ingredients. Inside that patty, we put garlic-infused confit, our special sauce, and American cheese with thinly sliced onions and pickles that we source locally from Jersey.”
Samantha Cassell gave a cheeseburger-making tutorial, explaining that each sandwich is cooked for four minutes, shaped with a cast iron smash and seasoned with plenty of salt.
As for whether 20g makes money on cheap fares, the answer is both yes and no. A cheeseburger costs $1.92 to produce, but the business makes only 5 cents per sandwich, factoring in rent and labor costs.
“We don’t need to make money on every single item in the store,” Kim said. “If it’s a feel-good thing that everyone can enjoy, why not? Customers, while they’re waiting for their burger after placing their order, will come down and shop in our market downstairs, getting a soda or drink on the way out.
If burgers aren’t your thing, at 20 grams, you can order a $3 bacon egg and cheese sandwich, 20 different types of ramen, or wings.
“It’s perfect for kids after school or for people who work nearby,” Kim said. “I want it to be a place for everyone.”
