Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.’s (RFK’s) name will not appear on ballots in North Carolina or Michigan following emergency orders issued Friday by courts in both states, a pair of big wins for former President Donald Trump.
RFK suspended his long-running third-party bid for the White House and threw his support behind Trump, shaking up the political establishment because of the Kennedy family’s dynastic position in the Democratic Party.
While Kennedy could not win the White House under any realistic scenario, polls showed him with a high enough single-digit strength to potentially swing the results between Trump and Kamala Harris in certain battleground states, depending on which major party candidate he received more votes from. were, including Michigan and North Carolina.
Political allies of Kamala Harris hope to put RFK on the ballot in some states, including those two states, calculating that RFK will outvote Trump over Harris in those states.
The matter became urgent in North Carolina, where the first absentee ballots would be mailed to voters.
A North Carolina court ruled that RFK’s name would be off the ballot in that state, ordering the trial court presiding over the matter to order the state election board to print and mail ballots that did not list Kennedy as a candidate.
Harris’ allies can still appeal the order to the North Carolina Supreme Court.
Although Michigan’s absentee ballots aren’t set to go out yet and so the matter wasn’t as urgent there, it’s still a big development, given that Democrats will likely try to take over the Michigan Supreme Court on an emergency basis.
The first case is Kennedy v. North Carolina State Board of ElectionsNo. 24CVS27757 in the North Carolina Court of Appeals.
