speaker About Birla, After sloganeering by some Lok Sabha members during oath taking, Speaker Om Birla has amended the rule according to which, elected MPs cannot make any extempore remarks while taking oath as a member of the House. After sloganeering by some MPs during oath taking as a Lok Sabha member, Speaker Om Birla has given directions to add a new clause which specifies that a member shall not use any word or expression as prefix or suffix in the form of oath or affirmation. Om Birla amended ‘Direction 1’ of ‘Directions by the Speaker’ and a new clause (3) has been added after clause (2) from June 28. The new clause states that the member shall take and subscribe the oath, as the case may be, according to the form prescribed for the purpose in the Third Schedule to the Constitution of India and shall not use any word or expression as prefix or suffix in the form of oath or affirmation or make any extempore remarks.

Some members raised slogans during oath taking

The speaker had earlier expressed concern over members using words beyond the required text while taking oath and said he would form a panel. Some members had raised slogans like Jai Samvidhaan and Jai Hindu Rashtra while taking oath. One member had also raised the slogan Jai Palestine. The first session of the eighteenth Lok Sabha concluded on Tuesday. New members took oath and the House adopted the motion of thanks on the President’s address after a debate. Prime Minister Narendra Modi responded to the debate.
