Mamata Banerjee surrounded from all sides on Kolkata incident, questions raised from road to Supreme Court

Mamata Banerjee’s political career gained momentum only after she raised the issue of harassment of a woman in West Bengal, that was the year 1992. Today, 32 years later, the gruesome incident with a woman in West Bengal has put Mamata Banerjee’s 13-year-long political rule in a very difficult labyrinth. Where questions are being raised on the state government, some of the government’s decisions, government machinery, everything.

Even though the CBI is now investigating the rape and murder of a female trainee doctor in a medical college on the night of 8-9 August in Kolkata, the Bengal Police has caused such a disgrace in the first 5 days in a sensitive case that the Chief Justice’s bench in the Supreme Court has to say that it has not seen such negligence in 30 years. It is clear that the court has full doubts about the role of Kolkata Police in this incident.

Kolkata Police, the police investigation process, police trust… security, everything is under suspicion under the rule of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. So, is Mamata Banerjee, who 32 years ago went to the West Bengal Secretariat building, i.e. Writers’ Building, demanding justice for a victimised girl, now herself in power and facing the biggest questions after a gruesome incident with a female doctor during her rule?

In the case of rape-murder of a female trainee doctor inside RG Kar Medical College on the night of 8-9 August, first the Supreme Court did not consider the Kolkata Police trustworthy enough to investigate the rape-murder case. Then the Kolkata Police was also not considered capable of protecting the doctor. Now the Kolkata Police has been found to be extremely negligent in the first five days of investigation. Even the committees organising Durga Puja have started returning government aid, not trusting the intentions of the Bengal government.

There was a time when Mamata Banerjee had gone to the Writers’ Building from where Jyoti Basu used to run Bengal’s government, to protest against a rape victim who was unable to speak or hear during the CPM’s rule. Mamata’s aim was to show that the rule of law has ended in West Bengal during the Left’s rule. That’s when the police forcibly picked up Mamata Banerjee and threw her out of the Writers’ Building. It is said that after this incident, Mamata Banerjee had said that she would step into the Writers’ Building only when she gets power.

In 2011, Mamata Banerjee formed her own government with the TMC party, but it is alleged that Mamata, who talked about bringing rape victims together and getting them justice, after coming to power herself started dodging the cases of injustice against women by calling it politics.

In 2012, a woman was raped in Park Street, a posh area of Kolkata. Mamata Banerjee then called it fabricated and a conspiracy against the government. In 2013, Mamata Banerjee had described the protest against the Kamduni gangrape case as CPM sponsored, while in 2022 the Chief Minister described the Hanskhali rape case as a love affair. But amidst all this, Mamata Banerjee has definitely been saying that she wants justice. That is why in 2013, the Chief Minister had called the protest against the rape case a political conspiracy and had reached on a bike to meet its victims. This time too, after meeting the victim’s family, Mamata Banerjee is demanding immediate hanging of the accused.

Where the Bengal government and the government machinery itself are in the dock after the incident at RG Kar Medical College. Meanwhile, Mamata has written a letter directly to the Prime Minister demanding that every rape case should be heard quickly in a fast track court. The trial in every rape case should be completed within 15 days.

In such a situation, the question arises whether by writing a letter of demands, the Mamata government wants to confine those questions in an envelope, which are being asked from the Supreme Court to the streets of Kolkata?
