Madrasa students will be deployed for the security of temples… This is the preparation of the interim government for Durga Puja in Bangladesh

Amid apprehensions of possible unrest during Durga Puja, the interim government of Bangladesh on Sunday warned potential miscreants of strict action. The government has said that under no circumstances will they spare those who disrupt communal harmony or target places of worship during the Hindu festival. Also, orders have been given to deploy madrassa students for the security of temples.

Religious affairs advisor Dr AFM Khalid Hussain said during a visit to the Kali temple, “If anyone creates a ruckus at places of worship or disturbs people who are worshipping, we will not spare them. We will bring them to the law and ensure peace.” Durga Puja is on October 8-9.

Warning given to miscreants during temple visit

Khalid Hussain urged the members of the Hindu community to celebrate their festivals with zeal and religious fervour and assured them that no harm would be allowed to their temples. “If you fear attacks on your temples, rest assured that no criminal will succeed. We have deployed local people, including madrasa students, to protect the temples. No one can stop us from celebrating our religious festivals,” Hussain said.

Interim government’s attempt to eradicate communalism!

Stating that the interim government seeks to transform Bangladesh into a discrimination-free and communalism-free state, Hussain said, “Our aim is to build a safe and prosperous society.” The Hindu minority community had faced alleged incidents of vandalism of their businesses and properties and attacks on temples during the student-led violence that followed Sheikh Hasina’s ouster. Hasina resigned and fled to India after the protests reached a peak on 5 August.

Madrasa children were made volunteers

Hossain met government officials at the Rajshahi Circuit House on Saturday and warned that miscreants may try to threaten communal harmony ahead of Durga Puja. “We have to oppose them together,” he said, suggesting that madrasa students could be engaged as volunteers to help protect temples during the festival. Apart from this, the adviser has also instructed law enforcement and administration to take measures to protect puja pavilions.
