In this regard, the Yogi government of UP has introduced a bill in the assembly on Monday.

The government has introduced the Prohibition of Unlawful Religious Conversion (Amendment) Bill in the Assembly. It proposes to increase both the scope of the crime and the punishment. A new clampdown has been put on both funding and crime.

Funding is also a crime under the new law

In the bill presented in the assembly, funding for illegal religious conversion has also been brought under the ambit of crime under this law. This also includes funding from foreign institutions or any illegal organization. If anyone puts a person in fear of life or property, attacks, uses force or promises to marry or conspires for this with the intention of religious conversion, then he will have to pay a fine along with life imprisonment. The court will be able to decide a fair amount as a fine for the medical expenses and rehabilitation of the victim. The government says that to stop the sensitivity of the crime, dignity and social status of women, illegal conversion of women, SC-ST etc., it was felt that the punishment and fine need to be made more stringent. Therefore, this bill is being brought.

Now this will be the punishment

For converting a handicapped or mentally challenged person by deceit or coaxing, a person will be jailed for 5-14 years and fined Rs 1 lakh. For illegal religious conversion, foreign funding will lead to 7-14 years of imprisonment and a fine of Rs 10 lakh. For trafficking of a minor, woman or person for illegal religious conversion, the court will decide the punishment from 20 years to life imprisonment and fine.
